Fielding says he was sexually abused

Family First senator Steve Fielding has told how he was sexually abused as a child, ahead of a national apology to the Forgotten Australians.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull on Monday said sorry to Australians who suffered as children in state and church-run institutions up to the late 1970s.

Asked if the word “sorry” would be enough for children who were placed in foster and institutionalised care, Senator Fielding revealed his own experience.

“I was sexually abused as a child by a scoutmaster for years,” he told reporters in Canberra on Monday, adding his heart went out to anyone with a similar experience.
